Executive Assistant to Virtual Assistant – Starting the Journey

A little over three years ago, my career path looked a lot like something very familiar to you. After 8 years of working in various administrative support positions, I had “worked my way” up to working with a Senior Managing Director at a prestigious private equity firm. It was a great job, but I had maxed out on all compensation and growth opportunities.

Many smart, polished Executive Assistants often find themselves in this position. The solutions to this dilemma are few:

1) You look for a new job and hope you fare better than your current situation;
2) You suck it up and attempt to make the best of your current position;
3) You miserably endure a company, boss or job that doesn’t suit you because you are scared to leave or don’t want to go through the process of looking for a new job.

When I was preparing to relocate from Washington, DC to California, I considered all of the options available to me, that being, trying to transfer within my company, working with a recruiter to find in new job, or striking out on my own to start my own business. I seriously considered the first two, talked to my inter-company contacts, met with recruiters, scoured Monster.com and Craigslist, and got some interesting offers. But all the while, I had this gnawing feeling that I just didn’t want another “job”. I wanted freedom, I wanted more opportunity and I was a bit tired of corporate America.

If you read my special report, you know by now that I had a really sweet setup at my last job and when faced with leaving it, I quickly realized that I didn’t want to “start over” in my career, getting used to a new culture, company, boss and start sitting behind a desk for 8+ hours per day.

So, my journey to becoming a Virtual Assistant started with one simple step … a DECISION. I made a decision that I was going to start my own business and be successful. I didn’t know how I would make this happen, but I determined in my heart that I would. And, I didn’t realize it at the time, but that was the day I started out on this amazing journey. That was the day I began to change from an EA to a VA. It was a monumental day, but started with one simple step … a DECISION.

As a seasoned administrative professional, you will at some point be faced with the decision about what to do next in your career. When that day comes, weigh all of your options, be honest with yourself about what YOU REALLY WANT, and then …. Make a decision! Make a decision to pursue your dreams, to stand up for yourself, and to have the career you really want. You deserve it, you CAN have it and I’m going to do everything I can to help you get there.

  • Excellent information Sydni. There is a high level of credibility one establishes by sharing their own journey for change.

    I especially enjoyed reading about your decision to leave your “safe” job. In reality, when something is no longer working it is not safe. Your willingness to venture out is a great example of taking a leap of faith in which you are flying.
